Little Hampton, Macedon Ranges


A classic growing season in the Macedon Ranges. A settled flowering led to good crop levels. A wet start to spring meant careful canopy management and crop thinning were required. A perfectly mild and long end to summer allowed fruit to reach is full flavour ripeness, while retaining good acid structure. The 740 meters above sea level elevation site of Little Hampton has extra cool nights, helping to retain natural acidity in the grapes.

Wine Making

Hand harvested fruit was firmly whole bunch pressed to release the Pinot Gris full flavour profile. Natural ferment occurred in older French barrels. The wine was left to unwind and age slowly on its ferment lees to add generosity. After 9 months the wine was racked and filtered prior to bottling in September 2018.

From one of the coolest wine regions in Australia (and not just for temperature), comes this stunning Pinot Gris from Shadowfax. Sourced from their Little Hampton vineyard high in the Macedon Ranges, the 2018 Shadowfax Macedon Pinot Gris strikes the perfect balance between ripe, rounded Gris flavour, and beautifully etched natural acidity.

Thanks to the cooler temperatures and high altitude of the Macedon vineyards, the fruit retains this lovely acidity, while it is left to ripen perfectly during the warmer months. Gris can be tricky to get right – too ripe, and its becomes cloying and flabby. Picked too early, it lacks character and depth. Fortunately Head Winemaker Alister Timms, is a master of his craft, and has plenty of vintages at Shadowfax under his belt. He’s pitched this one perfectly.

‘The bouquet is soft and ripe, peach and other yellow fruit aromas, fully ripe and verging on spicy. The palate is likewise generous, ripe and rounded, with ample flavour and softness, finishing with a kick of white pepper. It’s quite rich really, yet remains light on its feet… It’s as good as any Australian pinot gris I’ve tasted.’

It’s hard to recall a better Aussie gris than this one, grown at Little Hampton at 750 metres altitude. Aromas include ripe peach and other yellow fruits, laced with spices and finishing with a gentle kick of white pepper. Residual Sugar



Light straw, green hue, brilliant clarity.


This high altitude Pinot Gris displays great aromatic lift. Potpourri, orange blossom and citrus notes leap from the glass. The perfume is persistent and intriguing, always bringing you back for another sniff.


A rich, powerful palate of fig, waxy almonds and sherbet-like acidity. Textured and mouth-filling, the fruit is strong, long and beautifully defined. These fruit flavours are complexed with barrel ferment characters such as nougat. The fruits are enveloped with fine grapefruit pith texture giving extra intrigue.
