Midhill Vineyard, near Romsey, was planted in 1993. It is in a very cool spot 540m above sea level, and in 2011 ripened a small crop of intense, beautifully balanced Chardonnay. The vines are meticulously managed, and consistently produce exceptional fruit.
Fruit was handpicked and whole bunch pressed, then transferred to used French hogsheads for fermentation and maturation. The wine remained undisturbed until racking, a light filtration and bottling on 7 May 2012.
Bright pale straw green, lovely green edge.
Typically restrained on opening, this wine opens to reveal white florals, nectarine, a hint of seashell and some complexing reduction.
The palate is fine, tight and very fresh. White peach, nectarine and some mineral derived wet stones. Acidity is brisk in the young wine, but will soften with time. A beautiful Midhill Chardonnay reflecting the very cool growing season and attention to detail in the winery.
Roasted grouse, rare seared pheasant and wild caught salmon.
