Little Hampton Pinot Noir 2015
October 13, 2016
Campbell Mattinson, winefront, October 2016
Pinot noir from the Little Hampton vineyard makes it into the Shadowfax Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir but this is the single vineyard (and inaugural) release. It’s from a one hectare plot of pinot noir planted in 1999. More pinot noir and chardonnay vines have recently been added to this property but don’t, of course, yet feature in this wine.
Fancy booze. Plush and sappy at once. Spicy as all get-up. Strung with herbs, gently bitter, a little challenging and yet a lot seductive, all in one package. Its light and fragrant, powerful and impressive – yes, all those things. Texture here is terrific. Tannin is in a good place; length far exceeds the norm. But the combination of complexity and texture is really the thing here. It’s going to age magnificently. 94 points.
